| Customer Reviews: A brilliant collection of information and life stories November 27, 2009 balbus (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
There are plenty of books giving advice on managing childhood diabetes, but Rachel has taken this to a new level by including the experiences of children and adults who have lived with diabetes. Their stories offer insights and encouragement, as well as giving a glimpse into how young people and their families deal with the problems and challenges diabetes throws at them every day.
Although the book is written for parents, it should also be compulsory reading for the health professionals who help children and their families. They need to listen to these voices and learn from them.

A Grandma of a Diabetic. September 24, 2009 Mrs. Marie A. Caltieri (Keighley, W. Yorks.) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
My granddaughter,(Martina in the book) recommended the book to me, and I have enjoyed it tremendously. I steer clear of many of the learned journals on Juvenile Diabetes, mainly because I find them too technical. This book covers all the ground, yet there is a complete absence of jargon and it is written in a down to earth fashion, making it easy to understand. The many examples of young diabetics brings home the problems they face, and helps them - and their parents - to cope. I am so proud of my granddaughter, who has accepted that her blindness was caused by her teenage rebellion against injecting, and is anxious to share her experiences in the hope that others, who face the same temptations, will be helped by her honesty.
Brilliant for parents... September 10, 2009 D. J. Williams 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
My son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 13 - it should got without saying that it threw the family into chaos, and started a steep learning curve for us all. As a parent it's a real blow to see your child develop a complicated condition, but in time you do get used to it and life returns to normal. One of the most difficult aspects as a parent is having to live with the condition at arms length, and try and do the right things for your child wihtout really being able to experience what they are going through. Dr Besser's book gives you that valuable insight as to what your child is going through, what is difficult for the child... and often you find the bits that you thought were a worrying were not and vice versa. As someone who has had diabetes since she was 6, and now treats children with the condition, and therefore has a good understanding of what worries parents, she is in a position to give a unique perspecitive from both the young person with diabetes, and of their family - she features children of all ages and their parents, coping with most aspects of the condiion. My son is now 19, attending university and having a ball :-) An invaluable and very readable book.
Haven't finished it yet but fantastic! July 28, 2009 A. King 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've had diabetes for nearly 17 years and now run holidays for children with diabetes. If I could I'd give a copy of this book to every parent of a child on the holidays and even everyone who knows anyone with diabetes, although it is aimed at parents.
Often I meet children and parents who have real problems in accepting their diabetes and feel they are alone. This book puts things into perspective, goes through possible problems and issues and how various people with diabetes and their families coped with them. There are many books that talk about diabetes but this is the first book I've seen that is about the real-life day-to-day living with it.
Apart from many stories and viewpoints from young people with diabetes(as no two people are the same), the book also explains various medical issues in plain english that the average person can understand.
I will definitely be taking this book with me on the next camp I run to help me understand what the medical professionals there are talking about and to help me answer questions about diabetes when children ask them.
If your child has recently been diagnosed, is finding it hard to accept their diabetes or gets angry with you when you ask if they've remembered their biscuits, then this book is a must for you!
